Successful Integration of Innovation and Tradition

The modern development phase of the Odesa Law Academy is characterized by the active implementation of advanced teaching methodologies, the expansion of information technologies within the University, and the strengthening of international relations. Despite the restrictions imposed in 2020 due to the spread of the coronavirus infection and in 2022 as a result of military aggression, the educational process at NU "OLA" never ceased and was in no way simplified. Since the 1990s, the institution has upheld an unwavering goal—to remain the flagship of higher legal education in Ukraine, no matter the circumstances.

Completion of Cutting-Edge Laboratory Construction

In December 2020, the Faculty of Cybersecurity and Information Technologies inaugurated two innovative laboratories: the Robotics and Information Technology Laboratory and the specialized "KeepSolid" Laboratory. This new scientific space provides students with the opportunity to refine their skills in 3D modeling, robot design, and the development and operation of complex information security systems.

The facility is equipped with a specialized access control system using contactless cards, which identifies all visitors and sends notifications to those responsible for access. Future cybersecurity specialists immediately began developing a monitoring system in the new laboratories using facial recognition technology and artificial intelligence. The official opening ceremony was attended by the Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Ihor Garbaruk.

Additionally, to discuss the prospects of integrating Ukraine's educational space into European standards, Odesa Law Academy welcomed the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Serhiy Shkarlet, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, Serhiy Zakharin, as well as an international delegation, including H. Combating COVID-19

In the spring of 2020, the world faced a significant challenge—the COVID-19 pandemic. Serhiy Kivalov promptly decided to fully mobilize medical resources and unite the efforts of the International Humanitarian University and the National University "Odesa Law Academy" to support students, faculty, staff, and all residents of Odesa.

From the very first days of the pandemic, an Epidemic Control, COVID-19 Response, and Pandemic Protection Center was established at the university clinic of the International Humanitarian University. Within just a month, lecture halls were converted into intensive care units, and a COVID-19 Response Center was rapidly set up. A total of 15,000 COVID-19 test kits were procured, along with modern ventilators, oxygen cylinders, infusion pumps, and other essential medical equipment. As part of a social initiative, tens of thousands of Odesa residents and people from the Odesa region had the opportunity to receive free testing and high-quality medical care.

Completion of the "School of the Future" Construction

In September 2020, the International Academic School "Odesa" was inaugurated. The construction of the school, initiated with the blessing of Metropolitan Agafangel of Odesa and Izmail, lasted nearly 10 years. The founder of the "School of the Future," Serhiy Kivalov, aimed to create an educational institution unparalleled in Ukraine and Europe.

With a total area of 22,000 square meters, the school is designed to accommodate 1,200 students. It features an indoor sports complex, a spacious gymnasium, an Olympic-standard swimming pool with six lanes, a smaller pool for younger children, a school café, and a cinema and concert hall with 800 seats. Enhancing the architectural ensemble, the school is adorned with two churches—one dedicated to the Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian and the other to Saint Sergius of Radonezh, the patron of all who pursue learning.

Establishment of the Kyiv University of Intellectual Property and Law Based on the NU "OLA" Educational Center

In November 2021, the Kyiv University of Intellectual Property and Law opened its doors as an independent educational institution. Originally founded as a structural unit of NU "OLA," today it stands as one of the most progressive universities in the country, with over 2,000 students pursuing their education there. Over the years, the university has developed a strong and experienced faculty, while its material and technical infrastructure continues to be improved.

KUIPL serves as a meeting place for distinguished legal scholars, high-ranking government officials, students, and professors. Formerly the capital's branch of NU "OLA" and now an autonomous educational institution, it has repeatedly hosted in its grand hall the General Assembly of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine, leadership from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and representatives of international institutions specializing in intellectual property and patent law.

University Development During Martial Law

With the onset of war in Ukraine in 2022, the teams of the National University "Odesa Law Academy," the International Humanitarian University, and the Kyiv University of Intellectual Property and Law, under the leadership of Serhiy Kivalov, focused their efforts on providing maximum support to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the State Border Guard Service, and other defense units protecting Ukrainian territory.

Over the past two years, students and faculty members of these universities have organized hundreds of charitable initiatives in support of soldiers, almost every month donated blood for wounded defenders, periodically allocated a day's salary to the needs of the Armed Forces, and supplied tens of thousands of ration packs, technical equipment, and other essential materials. The National University "Odesa Law Academy" transfers approximately 10 million hryvnias to the state budget each month, contributing to the army's funding. Moreover, 52 students and 12 faculty members of Odesa Law Academy have voluntarily joined military service. This is the highest number among all higher education institutions in Ukraine. To ensure the safety of the educational process during wartime, comfortable shelters have been built in all academic buildings and dormitories of NU "OLA".

International Scientific and Practical Conference with the Participation of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

In May 2023, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the globally recognized and respected "Iron General" Valerii Zaluzhnyi, attended an international conference dedicated to Science Day at the National University "Odesa Law Academy." The Commander-in-Chief congratulated the university community on the occasion and tasked Odesa Law Academy scholars with drafting modern legislation on the status of Armed Forces personnel, aligning with EU and NATO standards.

Additionally, during sectional meetings, participants actively discussed issues related to state and public affairs, international law and security, digitalization and informatization, cybersecurity in the era of rapid artificial intelligence development, economic recovery and post-war reconstruction, as well as the transformation of science and society in the context of European integration and military aggression, and the future of Ukraine along with other critical contemporary topics.

A Quarter-Century of Achievements

Despite the challenging times for the country, on December 2, 2022, the National University "Odesa Law Academy" celebrated its 25th anniversary. The celebration took place in the state-of-the-art cinema and concert hall of the International Academic School "Odesa," accompanied by the hum of generators. As with every event held by NU "OLA" during martial law, an essential part of the university's anniversary was the recognition of students, faculty, and alumni who, despite having military exemptions, chose to stand in defense of Ukraine's independence.

Additionally, honorary guests addressed the university community with congratulatory speeches, including the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Serhii Shkarlet, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, Serhii Zakharin, and the Head of the National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance, Andrii Butenko. Odesa Regional Prosecutor Serhii Kostenko, himself an alumnus of Odesa Law Academy, shared his memories of the university's formative years.

Epilogue

Serhiy Kivalov's comprehensive approach to the development of Ukraine's education sector will continue through the further expansion of educational institutions, modernization of their material and technical infrastructure, and the introduction of new training programs for future specialists. The leadership of NU "OLA" has numerous social, infrastructural, and educational projects in the pipeline, all of which will undoubtedly be implemented and bring tangible benefits to the citizens of Ukraine.

The key principle behind the success of the founder and president of the Odesa Law Academy, Serhiy Kivalov, is encapsulated in three words: "Never simplify!" The faculty and staff of NU "OLA" have consistently adhered to this rule, fostering student life, sports, science, and spiritual development, regardless of the challenges of the present day.
