The School of the Future

By 2017, the educational institution had almost fully taken shape – closely resembling the vision talented Odesa architects had designed back in 2012. Finishing work was in full swing in the spacious classrooms, sports hall, swimming pools, and concert hall. For the spiritual development of future students, another temple – St. John the Theologian's Church – was built, located below the Temple of St. Sergius of Radonezh. Notably, in April 2017, the first baptisms were held in the upper temple.

The unique educational complex was increasingly referred to as the 'School of the Future'. By August 2018, it had reached a new level of material infrastructure. The task set by Sergiy Kivalov for the contractors was successfully completed – students, teachers, and all staff had to feel comfortable in the school year-round. A comprehensive list of advanced technologies was installed, including solar panels, heat pumps, full ventilation systems, and a modern boiler room. Next to the complex, a powerful heliosystem with 100 solar collectors was installed, ensuring the school remained warm, bright, and cozy, and most importantly, safe.

Strict fire safety standards were followed – alarms and 24/7 video surveillance were installed. Teachers underwent specialized training to work at the School of the Future. Each classroom was equipped with interactive panels and the latest technology, allowing teachers to integrate classical subjects with Christian ethics, chess, swimming, and robotics – an unparalleled educational approach in Ukraine.

The Long-Awaited Opening

In September 2020, the school officially opened its doors to students. According to Sergiy Kivalov, then president of the International Academic School 'Odesa', although the school was designed for 1,250 students, it was planned to initially enroll no more than 200. As expected, the School of the Future launched with 100 students in preschool and primary grades. As the institution grew, it expanded its programs and services to include secondary and high school levels.

A year later, in September 2021, the school's sports facilities expanded with an outdoor sports complex, featuring a football stadium with grandstands, running tracks for athletics, and a modern gym.

Innovative Education

Beyond classical subjects, the modern curriculum introduced mandatory disciplines, including swimming, chess, Christian ethics, and robotics. From first grade, students study foreign languages. Alongside English, French, and German, Hebrew was also added. Special emphasis is placed on STEM subjects, namely, biology, mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Physical education is also a priority, allowing students to choose from various sports and creative activities, such as football, wrestling, acrobatics, dance, music, theater, visual arts, and engineering design.

The school boasts a highly qualified staff including teachers from Ukraine, the USA, and other countries. These teachers bring international experience and actively support students in achieving success, including university admissions both in Ukraine and abroad.

Minister of Education Visit to the School of the Future

In July 2021, the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Sergiy Shkarlet, visited the International Academic School 'Odesa', touring its facilities. "This is a model school, an example to follow. If every person with resources built at least one such institution in their region, the level of education in our country would improve significantly," the minister remarked.

Shkarlet was particularly impressed by the school's innovations, including robotics and programming courses, a diverse dietary menu, a state-of-the-art sports and wellness complex, and interactive boards in every classroom.

Since September 2021, the school has launched the 'Easy Language Exchange' program, allowing students to enhance their foreign language skills through direct conversations with native speakers. International teachers prepare interactive speaking exercises, engaging students in dynamic, real-life language practice.

Today, the International Academic School 'Odesa' is one of the largest and most prestigious educational institutions in Ukraine and Europe. As of the 2023-2024 academic year, the school has over 700 students from Ukraine and around the world. The school remains a center of academic and athletic life in Southern Ukraine, its cinema and concert hall host major city events, while its sports complex is a venue for national and international competitions in chess, gymnastics, swimming, football, and many other sports. This vibrant environment fosters the holistic development of every student.

The Establishment of the First School Parliament

On March 21, 2024, the International Academic School 'Odesa' marked a historic milestone, namely, the election of its first-ever School Parliament, the primary student self-governance body. Students from grades 5 to 10 actively participated, nominating candidates and voting for representatives from each grade level. In total, 14 parliament members were elected, including the Head of the Student Parliament.

In their first addresses, the newly elected representatives shared ambitious plans, such as creating a music center, a new chemistry lab, improving the school uniform, and founding a volleyball team. This significant step marks just the beginning of an exciting journey in student governance, aimed at enhancing the learning environment and engaging students in shaping their school's future.
